Introduction To Dental Implants

Have you ever wondered about dental implants? Check out this guide to learn all about restoring your smile with implants. Here you will find information about What Dental Implants are, The types of Dental Implants, Who is eligible to get dental implants, And the various implant dental treatment.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are like fake tooth roots, usually made from titanium. They provide a strong base for new teeth. They are here to save your oral health when you think all hope is lost.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

  • Dental implants are a long-term fix for missing teeth, better than dentures or bridges.
  • They help to keep your face looking young by keeping your jawbone strong and by  keeping the face from sagging.
  • With dental implants, you can eat, talk, and smile with confidence just like with real teeth.
  • In terms of cost, dental implants provide better solution rather than dentures which you will have to change more frequently

Types of Dental Implants

  1. Endosteal Implants: These implants are the most common type of Implants and they are placed surgically into the jawbone. They provide a strong foundation for individual artificial teeth or for dental bridges. Endosteal implants are suitable for most patients with healthy jawbones and enough bone density.

  2. Subperiosteal Implants: Unlike endosteal implants, subperiosteal implants are placed on top of the jawbone but underneath the gum tissue. This type of implant is best for patients with shallow jawbones or insufficient bone density to support traditional implants. Subperiosteal implants consist of a metal framework that sits on the jawbone and supports fake teeth.

  3. Zygomatic Implants: Zygomatic implants are used when traditional implants can not be used, due to insufficient jawbone structure. Instead of being placed in the jawbone, zygomatic implants are secured in the cheekbone (zygoma). This alternative approach of doing Implants provides stability and support for dental prosthetics, particularly in cases of severe bone loss in the upper jaw.

NB: People who don’t have enough bones in their jaws for the traditional implants or the endosteal implants, can go through a procedure known as Bone Grafting. Additionaly, Bone Grafting is simply adding artificial bones into the patients upper jaw where there was not enough bone structure before. This artificial bone will then heal with time and act as the patients real bones.

Dental Implant Treatment Methods

  1. All-on-4: The All on 4 dental treatment method simply  involves placing four dental implants strategically in the jawbone to support a full (All) arch of fake teeth (crowns) usually 24 of them, thus giving the name All on 4. This method is suitable for patients missing all or most of their teeth in one or both the upper and lower jaws. All-on-4 offers a permanent and long lasting solution, restoring function and aesthetics in a relatively short time.

  2. All-on-6: Similar to All-on-4, the All on 6 treatment method utilizes six dental implants to support a full arch of prosthetic teeth (crowns) 28 of them. By adding two additional implants, All on 6 provides increased stability and load-bearing capacity, particularly in cases of greater bone density or a larger dental arch.

  3. Single Tooth Implants: Single-tooth implants are used to replace single missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth. Each implant has a titanium post that is surgically placed in the jawbone. It is then covered with a crown that closely resembles the natural tooth in shape, size, and color. Single tooth implants give a permanent and aesthetic solution for single-tooth loss.

  4. Implant-Supported Bridges: Implant-supported bridges are a suitable option for patients missing multiple adjacent teeth. Unlike traditional dental bridges, which rely on adjacent natural teeth for support, implant-supported bridges are anchored securely to dental implants. This approach preserves the integrity of neighboring teeth and distributes chewing forces evenly across the dental arch.

Procedure for Dental Implant Treatment

  1. First Consultation: After examining your teeth, your dentist will discuss the kind of implant you need.
  2. Putting Implants: Later, usually while you’re under anesthesia (Local or General), the dentist places the implant into your jawbone.
  3. Healing Time: It takes a few months for your implant and jawbone to develop together. For some cases, two to three months will be enough, while other cases, up to 6 months especially if you had Bone Grafting
  4. Abutment: The dentist places a component on top of the implant when your jaw has healed.
  5. Crowns: Last but not least, the dentist creates a false tooth mostly made of Zirconium and places it atop the piece.
